4/704, Site specific Audio/Visual Instillation, Sandymount Strand Dublin 4, Dublin Fringe Festival 2014

Steel, Perspex, Shipping Barrels, Marine Ply, Railway Sleepers, Cloth, Dye, headphones, radio transmitter,

There are on average 704 high tides a year; 4/704 physically recorded 4 of them, transferring the mark of their highest point onto garments over a 48 hour period. 4/704 explores tipping points, sea level rise and the boundaries between moments. This pieced asked how do explore the phenomenology of tipping points and boundaries. The piece was designed and built using a buoyancy system inside a steel & perspex chamber and was activated by the incoming high tide on the weekend of a full moon and midnight tide. 2 audio tracks were experienced using dual channel radio headphones. The first track was composed in collaboration with Mark Colbert and Mark Butler. Multiple audio tracks were recorded by the duo in the area surrounding the site and on the outer perimeter of the Dublin Port, the traffic,  the sea at full tide and as it cam in, the distant noises of ships entering the port. The pitch, speed and frequency of the various recordings were manipulated and mixed to retell the story of the tides informed by multiple temporalities and spaces. The second track was a soundscape recorded on the west coast of Ireland by sound artist Slavik Kew. The radio signal was accessible within a certain distance from the transmitter so the audience themselves engaged with the signal and the site in the way they wanted.

The piece was built by hand by over 30 volunteers and experienced on a midnight full moon & high tide.
